Security in a RFID solution must start at the RFID tag.

If the tag cannot be trusted to contain uncompromised information, the whole system fails.

It must be possible to have access control and base this on a high level of security. Different users will need different access to information and hence it should be possible to grant read and/or write rights and both of them to limited areas of the RFID tags data storage.

Information should always be communicated in a secure manner. All information to and from the RFID tag should be protected by strong cryptography and be protected against eavesdropping. This is what the RFIDsec Secure Protocol (RSP) is all about.

Not only shall the data on the RFID tag be secure – measures to ensure privacy and security are also important. If the tag answers all request, there is a risk of the tag being used for surveillance – even if it only contains a number… It is important that RFID tags can be quiet and block unauthorized access. If the RFID tag can operate in silent mode, it is possible to implement services and communication after the sale of the tagged goods.

All of the above calls for implementing strong encryption on the RFID tag. The challenge is to find an encryption method that is possible to implement on passive RFID tags and which is convenient for the users.

This is the solution that RFIDsec has implemented in the combination of the RFIDsec?s Secure RFID Chip and the RFIDsec Access Management Software Platform.
